Since 1774 in Vienna, sponsored by the imperial court, study visits in Rome
and Naples. 1795 Director of the Academy,
from 1806 director of the Imperial Art Gallery in Vienna. Preferred portrait
and miniature painter of the Austrian aristocracy
and history painter. Under the influence of A.R. Mengs forerunner of classicism
in Austria.
He donated the medal named after him, wich is annually awarded by the Professors
College of the Academy
of Fine Arts, Vienna, for the best graphic works.
